The Boeing 777 is a widebody aircraft that has become ubiquitous on the world’s airliners. Its size, speed and range mean that it can connect almost anywhere in the world with relative ease. It is used by many of the world’s largest airlines and has a large presence in the business jet market. However, despite the popularity of the type and the success of Boeing’s 777 programme, it is not without its faults and some routes remain questionable to fly due to the cost of operating one.
The 777 has been in production for nearly 25 years and during that time it has been used by several hundred different airlines on a variety of different routes. It is a very versatile aircraft with the ability to fit a variety of layouts depending on the requirements of the airline. There are also a number of variants of the plane available which have been developed for specific markets or missions.
One such variant is the 777-200LR which was used on Air India’s diverted flight from Delhi to San Francisco. The problem with this flight is that the aircraft was made in 2022 which means it falls under US sanctions against Belarus and Russia due to their aggression in Ukraine. The Boeing 777-200LR is only built in the United States and any maintenance or repairs done on it will require parts that are not allowed to be shipped to Belarus or Russia for fear of being subjected to severe penalties under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
In addition to this, there https://143.198.211.51 may also be concerns over the availability of trained maintenance workers to fix any issues that might arise. As a result, the Air India flight was forced to divert to Magadan and the passengers and crew were stranded there for over 40 hours.
As a small far eastern port city, Magadan does not have any big hotels so it was not easy to find accommodation for the 216 passengers and 16 crew members that were displaced from their New Delhi to Madrid flight. Locals helped out as best they could but it is clear that finding proper accommodations was not an easy task. Many people were sleeping in places like dorm rooms and basketball courts and social media was full of pictures and videos of them doing so.
Fortunately, the airline did eventually send another Boeing 777 from Mumbai as a ferry flight to Magadan and this flight took all of the passengers onwards to San Francisco. It is important to remember that Air India had to take special care of the passengers from the U.S. on this flight and this was a significant factor in their decision to send a replacement aircraft. All of the passengers eventually reached their destination but this was not without a lot of inconvenience and anxiety for the majority of them. Luckily, everyone onboard survived the incident and no one was hurt. It is still unclear what caused the aircraft to malfunction but a mechanical issue with an engine seems likely.
