Unclogging Corks - How to Unclog Corks

Unless you’re an expert at this, it can be hard to unscrew a cork without damaging the glass or your hands. Fortunately, there are many methods for doing so. If patience, geometry, strategy, and advanced tools fail you, you can always try pushing the entire cork back into the bottle. This method can be messy, but it can also be surprisingly effective. Just be sure to lay a towel down before starting. And if you’re inside, make sure to clear the space in front of the bottle.

If you’re planning to use the wine for a dinner party or to store it in a cellar, you can simply pour it into another container with a lid. This will prevent your drink from spoiling until you’re ready to open the next one. If you don’t have a wine bottle opener handy, a fine kitchen sieve or colander can work just as well. You can even wrap a piece of cheesecloth around the top of the bottle opening to strain out any renegade cork crumbles.

A wine bottle opener can often be used as a staple remover, which is an especially useful tool when you’re working with leather. You can also use the tip of your knife for this purpose, although it’s Debouchage liege more difficult and riskier. To avoid cutting yourself, try to find the center of the clog and work around it, rather than trying to cut directly through it. You should also try to avoid turning the blade too close to the edge of the handle. Then, as you’re pulling the blade out of the clog, be careful to not pull too hard and risk breaking the cork in the glass or your hand.

If your Coravin needle becomes clogged with wine particles, you can use the Needle Clearing Tool included with your system. Each needle can be inserted into a cork about 300 times before it starts to wear down and become more difficult to insert or remove. To extend the life of your needle, avoid accessing a single bottle more than 25 times. Additionally, you should keep in mind that older and colder wines are less likely to reseal after being accessed.

To keep your cork floor in great shape, sweep it regularly with a soft-bristled broom or vacuum cleaner attachment. Sweep the edges and corners, as well, to make sure you don’t miss any grit or dirt that could gouge into or scratch the surface. In addition to regular sweeping, mop the floor once or twice a week with a mild cork-floor cleaning solution or wood-floor treatment.

Corks can be recycled by sending them to the association “Agir cancer Gironde” (French for “Recycle against Cancer”).
